May 17, 2017 Workshop Eurolab4HPC: The Future of High-Performance Computing

[EXCDI European HPC Summit Week 2017] Once again we collocated with EXCDI event. This time we had a larger scale event combining long term and strategic views of HPC with technical talks on current work. We were extremely fortunate for ARM’s VP of HPC research, Eric Van Hensbergen to give his perspective on the Exascale future. His view that Europe’s programme of low power processor design feeding into Exascale systems had fundamental flaws provided the basis for a lively debate.

April 28, 2017 Workshop Towards the Eurolab4HPC Long-term Roadmap on High- performance Computing in Years 2022-2030

[HiPEAC CSW Zagreb] There is an ever growing need for increased performance in IoT, embedded computing, but also for mid-level and high-performance computing. Because of the foreseeable end of CMOS scaling, new technologies are under development, as e.g. die stacking and 3D chip technologies, Non-volatile Memory (NVM) technologies, Photonics, Resistive or Memristive Computing, Neuromorphic Computing, Quantum Computing, Nanotubes, Graphene, and Diamond Transistors. The technologies will strongly impact the hardware and software of future HPC systems, in particular the processor logic itself, the (deeper) memory hierarchy, and new heterogeneous accelerators. As disruptive technologies offer many chances they entail also major changes from applications and software systems through to new hardware architectures.

The session started with an overview talk given by Theo Ungerer and Paul Carpenter about the on-going roadmapping efforts within Eurolab4HPC and was followed by an engaging audience discussion.

Jan. 25, 2017 Participation in NovExS-RAMbO: Workshop on Novel Exascale Systems / Rack-Scale Memory Systems and Models

[HiPEAC 2017 Conference] Exascale computing remains a grand challenge. While traditional computer systems continue to make great advances, it is argued that a paradigm shift in high performance computing is required to reach exascale. The objective of NovExS was to bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss novel ways of achieving exascale.

The scope of the workshop was both hardware and software aspects of exascale systems with a focus on novel ways of building systems. Contributions with radically new ideas with high potential but with less rigorous experimentation were welcome.

Sept. 21, 2015 Eurolab4HPC: Business Prototyping Tutorial

[HiPEAC CSW Milano] This tutorial introduced the Business Prototyping framework that will be used in Eurolab4HPC. The Business Prototyping framework draws on modern entrepreneurship theories that seek to adapt the Scientific Method to the process of creating new technology based business. During this process, entrepreneurs should clarify the assumptions that underpin the new business idea and then efficiently testing these, in order of priority, to see if the assumptions are correct or need to be revised. As a general rule, the more innovative a technology/business idea is, the more likely it is that the initial assumptions are incorrect.

Sept. 7, 2015 Eurolab4HPC kickoff

The first event consisted of a general introduction to the CSA, a business prototyping tutorial and a workshop on road mapping and fostering excellence in HPC systems research. It therefore primarily interacted with the workpackages on research and business prototyping and focused on opening up participation more widely.

Apart from presentations by members of the consortium there were several external speakers. The business prototyping tutorial was delivered by an external expert Henrik Berglund, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. AS HiPEAC and EXCDI are the two organisations we need to work with, they were both invited to give presentations. Marc Duranton CEA presented the HiPEAC vision while Francois Bodin, Univ. of Rennes, presented the EXCDI roadmap.
